In news that should come as no surprise to anyone, South Carolina basketball alum A'ja Wilson has been named the Western Conference Player of the Week and the Western Conference Player of the Month when the season-end awards were handed out on Friday.
Wilson has been named the Western Conference Player of the Week six times in 2024 (bringing her career total to 22), and she has also been named the Western Conference Player of the Month four times (12 career totals).
The only Player of the Month award that did not go to Wilson was the August award to mid-sized guard/center Napheesa Collier; Wilson had more points, rebounds, and blocks than Collier (by a significant margin) that month.
When the WNBA regular season ends this weekend, A'ja Wilson will have completed a record-breaking run with records for points, points per game average, rebounds, and player efficiency rating (PER).
She also leads the league in blocks, blocks per game average, double-doubles, and free throws made, ranks in the top five in blocks and blocked free throws per game average, and is in the top 10 in the WNBA in shooting percentage and free throw percentage among players with at least 100 attempts from the free throw line.
Surprisingly, despite her high offensive usage and heavy defensive load, she is not in the top 50 in the league in fouls and personal fouls.
A leading candidate for the WNBA’s non-splitting MVP award, Wilson should also be named Defensive Player of the Year and has put her Las Vegas Aces in a position to have a real chance to win their third straight WNBA Finals.
The WNBA Playoff season begins on Sunday, September 22, and Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces will kick off their playoff push with a best-of-three series against the Seattle Storm.
