Aces star A’ja Wilson sits out game against Liberty with painful injury that all athletes fear

Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson was forced to sit out of the game against the New York Liberty on Sunday due to an ankle injury, marking the first time she has missed a game since August 3, 2019.

Wilson, who has only missed three regular-season contests in her six-year career, sustained the injury during the game against Connecticut on Friday night. Although she was able to walk off the court, the 28-year-old center arrived at the arena on Sunday wearing a walking boot.

According to Las Vegas coach Becky Hammon, Wilson's injury is being approached with caution, and there are no long-term concerns. "Tweaked her ankle a little bit there. Everyone saw it on TV," said Hammon.

"Held her out today. We’ll see her status going into Indiana and how she feels. There’s never a good time for this. Does get a couple days to get that ankle right and get a little bit of rest."

Despite Wilson's exceptional performance this season, averaging 27.3 points, 11.98 rebounds, and 2.4 assists, the decision for her to sit out was made in agreement with the player herself.

Hammon stated, "She didn’t really have a choice. I told her she’s sitting out. It wasn’t a very big fight."

Wilson's absence presents a significant challenge for the Aces, as she has been a dominant force on the court, scoring more than 40 points twice in the team's last five games.

New York Liberty coach Sandy Brondello acknowledged Wilson's impact, stating, "A’ja is having an amazing season and that’s a big loss for them."

In response to Wilson's absence, Brondello noted that it provides an opportunity for Las Vegas coach Becky Hammon to explore different rotations and give confidence to other players.

"She’s got nothing to lose in that regard, everything to gain," said Brondello.

Wilson's commitment to her physical well-being and preparation for games was emphasized by Hammon, who praised the player's dedication off the court. "She loves competing, and she super takes care of her body," said Hammon. "She makes sure she’s ready to go.

She makes all the decision off the court that you guys never see or hear about to put her in the best position to be her best every night."

The impact of Wilson's absence on the Aces' upcoming games remains to be seen, as the team adapts to her temporary departure from the lineup. As Wilson focuses on recovery and rehabilitation, her teammates will need to step up to fill the void left by her absence on the court.
